Description

Sec.2 to Sec.4 provide guidance on the prediction of environmental conditions, including wind, wave, current, sea level, and sea ice conditions, as well as on the modelling techniques required to simulate them. Statistical models that can be used to describe general short-term metocean conditions and long-term models describing the metocean climate at a specific site are given. Probability distributions for single metocean parameters and joint distributions for establishing design load conditions associated with different design limit states are presented.

Analysis methods used to calculate environmental loads on structural elements in the marine environment are provided in Sec.5 to Sec.9. Guidance given in relation to the calculation of load(s) includes both simple hand calculations and state-of-the-art computational methods for more refined and complete analyses.

Guidance in relation to hydrodynamic model testing is provided in Sec.10.

The assessment of sea-ice conditions and loading on structures is presented in Sec.11 and Sec.12 respectively.

This RP also includes guidance and requirements for the accurate measurement of environmental parameters, e.g. wind, waves, current, and sea level.

The following environmental phenomena can be important for some structures, but analyses and loading associated with these are not addressed in this RP:

— earthquake

— soil conditions

— temperature.

New DNV Recommended Practice DNV-RP-C205 On Environmental Conditions And Environmental Loads

In an ongoing Joint Industry Project, DNV Classification Note 30.5: Environmental Conditions and Environmental Loads is being updated in accordance with the present state-of-the-art and corresponding industry needs and at the same time converted into a DNV Recommended Practice DNV-RP-C205. The updates include topics on non-linear wave diffraction around large volume structures, higherorder wave loading, slamming, run-up and wave in deck loads. The new RP also includes an improved description and statistical modeling of wind and ocean waves. Other new topics are shallow water waves and their load effects. New and updated guidance is provided on vortex induced vibrations in current and waves, and vortex induced motions of floaters. The new RP also has a chapter on model testing.
